Colorado Day 5/Estes Park to Steamboat Springs

On Wednesday morning we packed up the car, picked up one last donut from the Donut Haus and made the drive on Old Fall River Road up and over the pass to Steamboat Springs. It was another absolutely beautiful day--hot, sunny and dry! With all the rain we had last year while we were in Colorado it was nice to enjoy the hot, dry sun! Old Fall River Road is a gravel road that winds up to the top of Fall River Pass. It was the first road built in Rocky Mountain National Park to allow travelers to the top of the pass. We were lucky it was open this year, as we've been to CO in the past where it hasn't been open due to wet and unsafe conditions. It allows for some beautiful views and we had a great drive up this year!

We stopped at Chasm Falls on our drive up and hiked to see the Falls. It was beautiful!

We saw some marmots on the drive, which was a lot of fun. The kids would get so excited to see wildlife of any kind--it's so fun to vacation and see sights through the kids' eyes.

Marmot right in front of our car!

Elk down in the meadow

A Marmot's fur blowing in the wind on the rock! The kids thought it was the mama Marmot!

A few Elk hanging out
We drove around the top of the pass a little, looking for the large herd of Elk that are usually hanging out.....due to the warmer weather the animals had moved around to different places in the park, so we didn't see as many Elk this year. But, we got to see some Big Horned Sheep up close, which was really cool! It was SOOOOO windy and cool when we saw the sheep that my camera lens was hitting me in the face--I snapped a few pictures and we jumped back in the car to continue on our way to Steamboat!
I was SO excited to see a Big Horned Sheep so close up!

Showing Lucy the Elk!
We made it up and over the pass to Grand Lake. We stopped in town for icecream and lunch and to play at the park a bit before making the rest of the drive to Steamboat. It was such a great day--it was fun making the drive over the pass and to see new things, the kids loved it!

Grand Lake
We finally arrived in Steamboat around 4-4:30ish. We were welcomed by Emily to our cabin and the kids immediately jumped in the pool! We stayed the The Nordic Lodge, the place Emily manages. It was perfect! We had a one bedroom suite that had 2 beds. We didn't spend much time in our room, but it was nice to have the extra space to spread out a little in (as compared to a standard hotel room).

Fun to explore a new pool--and it was RIGHT behind our room! No walking up the big hill like in EP!

Cooling off in the pool!
We unpacked and made our way through town to dinner. It was a little bit of a walk, but we had to wait a long time for our food to come. We were all hungry and ready to eat! The waitress brought out dough for the kids to play with, which was a big hit (they kept the dough and played with it all week)!

They were chanting that they wanted to go to the park--they teamed up against mom and dad!

Flipping the dough!
It was dark on our walk back--we stopped by the river and checked out some more of the town before heading back to say good night to Emily!

These 3--my loves!

Classic Luke, kissing a pig!

The kids adore Emily! It was so fun being together!
